How it's calculated
Your Google rating is the average of every review you've had. Each new 5-star review pulls it up a little, and the more reviews you already have, the less each one moves it.
5-star reviews needed = reviews now × (target − rating now) ÷ (5 − target)
With your numbers: 40 × (4.6 − 4.3) ÷ (5 − 4.6) = 30, rounded up.
One bad review costs more than it looks: at 4.3 stars, a single 1-star takes 5 new 5-star reviews to undo. The higher your rating, the more it takes.
Reviews are a count. Rankings are a map.
Your review count is the same everywhere, but your rank isn't. A business can be top 3 at its front door and gone two miles away. The free scan searches Google Maps from 81 places around you and shows who has the reviews where you don't.

When more reviews won't move you
In 9 of the 50 trades the gap was small or reversed. Handymen and car detailers were level. In auto repair (75 against 103) and massage (16 against 37) the top 3 had fewer reviews than the rest. There, the right primary category and being near the searcher did more of the work. Reviews still help people choose you. They just won't win the map on their own.

Questions
How many 5-star reviews does it take to cancel out a 1-star review?
It depends on your rating, not your review count. At 4.2 stars it takes 4, at 4.5 it takes 7, and at 4.8 it takes 19. The formula is (rating − 1) ÷ (5 − rating), rounded up.
Is 20 Google reviews good?
It depends on the trade. In our searches across 10 big US metros, top-3 concrete contractors had a median of 9 reviews and handymen 16, while vets had 322 and dentists 304. Across all 50 trades the middle was 51.
Is 4.2 a good Google rating?
It's below the businesses that win the map. In all 50 trades we checked across 10 US metros, the top 3 had a median rating between 4.6 and 5.0. But the top 3 were rated the same or lower than the rest in 36 of them, so more reviews matter more than a perfect score.
Can I offer a discount for reviews?
No. Google doesn't allow rewards for reviews, asking only happy customers, or buying or swapping reviews. Ask every customer, right after the job, with a link that opens the review box.
