Google Maps for electricians: what gets you into the top 3

A lot of electrical work starts with a search like "electrician near me" on a phone, and Google answers with a map and three businesses. Here's what those three had in common across Central Florida, and how to join them.

Short answer

Electricians who reached the top 3 in our searches had a median of about 48 Google reviews and 23 photos, against 21 reviews and 13 photos for those stuck at 4–20. They were more likely to have a website and a second category like Electrical installation service. Closing the review gap is usually the biggest single move.

  • Ratings don't separate them: both groups sit at 4.9 stars. Volume does. The top-3 group had more than twice the reviews.
  • Photos almost doubled too (23 against 13). Real job photos are one of the easiest gaps to close.
  • Half of the top-3 electricians listed Electrical installation service as well as Electrician. Only a fifth of the rest did.
  • Nearly all were claimed, and 87% had a website on the listing, against 69% of the rest.

Five fixes, in order

  1. Claim and verify your profile. If Google shows your listing as unclaimed, nothing else counts. See is my business on Google Maps?
  2. Set Electrician as primary and add the services you do. Add Electrical installation service, plus Lighting contractor, EV charging or generator categories only if you really do that work.
  3. Get two new reviews a week. Ask after every finished job with a direct link. See how to get more Google reviews and the free review link tool.
  4. Add job photos every week. Panels, fixtures, EV chargers, your van and team. Aim to pass 25 photos, then keep adding.
  5. Put your website on the listing and reply to every review. Use a page that matches your main service and towns. See how to reply to reviews.

Questions

How many reviews does an electrician need to rank on Google Maps?

There's no fixed number. In our Central Florida searches the top-3 electricians had a median of about 48 reviews. What matters is the gap to the businesses above you in your own area, which a free scan shows.

Should I add EV charger installation as a category?

Only if you do that work. Categories should describe your business; adding ones you don't do can hurt more than help.

Why do I show up near my shop but not across town?

Distance is one of Google's three ranking factors, so everyone ranks best near their pin. Reviews, categories and a complete profile are what stretch that reach.
